"You will have a son and you must name him John." Luke 1:13

"John will be your joy and delight and many will rejoice at his birth..."  Luke 1:13  Today on the birth of our only son here on earth with us 22 years ago.  I promise to be concise in a truly TEC sort of way... We choose table names and many times we use a word and make meaningful thoughts using the letters of that word... so without further ado using our son's powerful and amazing name - so many, out of this world, saints are named John - so many feast days to celebrate!  Today being first and foremost a day of JOHN- we love you and happy feast/birthday!

Appreciating time with my healthy son...the day before his birthday!

My newborn son... 22 years ago tomorrow - we were so surprised to have a son!  This was my 8th pregnancy, and I was convinced that I could not carry boys, and had lost them to mischarriage - I had 3 mischarriages by this point, and 4 girls.  I had also had a ultrasound at 20 weeks, and on that grainy blurry picture that you would look at 22 years ago... it looked like we were having our 5th girl!  The day before I was induced to have him - I always was on bedrest due to increasing blood pressure, and induced to get the baby here safe.  The doctor was doing the amniocentisis guided by an ultrasound... to make sure not to poke the baby... he commented that it looked like a boy, and I quickly said that we had been shown that it was a girl... so we knew that..."Well, it must be big toe then."  he said with a twinkle in his eye.  The next day when John came out, we were shocked, and amazed, and happy to have a boy!  The doctor, we had had for all of our marriage, told us that he had known the day before...
A gift.... he was, and is to this day!  We all feel that way about our children, but it certainly makes you appreciate them to face one of the most horrific things there is - brain cancer - with your precious healthy strapping 6'4" son!  We were bonded so closely in the time we faced together for tests, and caring for all of his needs and then some!  A year ago in our little yellow house... as we had his stem cell transplant, and recovered enough of his cells to return home... we joked that it was almost as if the umbilical cord had reappeared!  So today to share this time back in our familiar stomping grounds... is kind of sweet, and special, and we expect to get only good news!

I think that you can tell by my rambling, that I am sitting here waiting long hours between tests and doctors... The words of Louis Lavelle yesterday on suffering really struck a cord of truth for me; "Relationships between two people have an acuteness and a depth that is in direct proprotion to their common suffering."  The mental suffering we shared equally.  The emotional suffering we shared equally - much like the umbilical cord shared my blood with him!  The physical pain - I know that he experienced that and I in fact did not, but you all know how you want to take that away from your child and suffer for them... it gets to the point that we do suffer with them!  We suffered together... we came to that acute closeness, and it was wonderful when he could go back to school and his life on his own... but we missed each other, and enjoy being together now in the world of healthy, and healing, and recovery!  We are blessed to be here a year later with high hopes, and trusting in the continued path He has laid out ahead of us!

"Today as Mary carries her baby to the temple, she is leading Jesus and us to God's dwelling place on earth."  from morning prayer - see http://www.magnificat.com/  We are forever blessed to have our amazing True Church with us as we make our journey of Truth, and Faith, and Hope - cancer/healing.  I rejoice as I have been given the gift of amazing time closely growing with my son as faith entered our hearts in a new and deeply personal way... and now as we take that faith out with us into our seperate lives!  Thank you, Jesus!  And now bless my son with a wonderful 22nd birthday tomorrow, and many more ahead... as the new and improved John with you at the center of his life!  Jesus,we trust in you!  Amen and Halleluia!

"See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; But upon you the Lord shines, and over you appears his glory.  Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance.
The Lord shall be your light forever, your God shall be your glory."  Isaiah 60: 2-3, 19
"Jesus Christ is the light no darkness can extinguish!"

Trust- Weather- Presenting our son to God

Changing the day of John's tests to today - we discovered that it is the feast of the Prsentation of the baby Jesus in the temple... there is always a powerful connection with what is going on across the world in our amazing Church!  WE made this journey over the last year and a half armed with all that it offered us, and continue to this very day!
"The light has come and has shone upon a world enveloped in darkness;  The Dayspring from on high has visited us and given light to those who lived in darkness.  Let us pray: You are the King of Glory."

So we present our son, once again to the Lord... trusting in His love and healing.  Jesus, we trust in you!  Amen and Halleluia!

Bless-bless, Barb
With my eyes I have seen the salvation which you have prepared in the sight of every people.

Grandma inside looking out at a winter wonderland...

The wind blew cascades of snow off the laden branches in the bright sunlight - a delight to behold from my perch looking out the large picture windown in the front of the house...
A call from my husband asking me to watch the 3 grandkids so that their dad can come and help blow snow..."Sure."    The house fills up with activity with 2 cats and 3 kids...run and get really tired kids and cats, because Grandma wants rosary/naptime...
Every one gets books at locations throughout the house... Two year old Davey gets a tractor calendar on grandma's bed... reminding me of the year that I watched him after Ruth went back to work, and until suddenly I had to be away with John to battle brain cancer at Mayo!  Davey and I would lay down after lunch with grandma's rosary beads... he would grab at them while sitting on my legs and grandma would say the soothing "Hail Marys" over and over - until we would get sleepy...
Today we looked at the pictures of the tractors and grandma's rosary was said after a wiggly Dave suddenly became still and sleeping... the two cats were draped at the end of the bed... total peaceful and fond memories of my special times with the kids, as I was their daycare provider until cancer changed everything - now I am a nursing home nurse, but from time to time have the joy of the kids and all they mean to me on a wintery snowy day!

Jesus,Please be with all those traveling - especially Maria and the kids as they are coming home from the Cities tonight.  Also with us as we head to Rochester with John tomorrow for his tests and Good News!  Jesus, we trust in you!  Amen and Halleluia!
Bless-bless, Barb

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and God of all encouragement, who encourages us in our every affliction, so that we may be able to encourage those who are in any affliction with the encouragement with which we ourselves are encouraged by God.  For as Christ's sufferings overflow to us, so through Christ does our encouragement also overflow."  2 Corinthians 1: 3-5
WE depend on your prayers, to continue on this journey called cancer/healing tomorrow in Rochester with John!

"Suffering... gives us an extraordinary intimacy with ourselves;" Louis Lavelle

Last night before bed as I read night prayers, and then with great anticipation went to read the Gospel for today - I was overjoyed to find... Mark 5:21-43... the story of the woman, who had suffered for 12 years with hemorhaging, and with faith came up and touched his garment, and was healed!  So powerful, and floods me with amazing memories of a powerful happening in my life - thanks once again to my children taking me deeper into my journey of faith!
I am using pictures of the time we went to Kansas City last March to spend some days with the Community of the Lamb - our daughter, little sister Hallel, has joined them.  Maria, her two little ones and I plan to spend 3 days with them next week!  I am so excited to have this mini retreat in the midst of my life!  Every day the little Sisters have mass and adoration and if possible they have it there in the amazing chaple they built on the model of all of their chapels on the first floor of an old Belgian rectory - they live here and are fundraising to build a new "little monastery" in the heart of our damaged needy country!
Back to my story, which I have shared in the past... Susan now Hallel, was living in a discernment house in the Cities, and she invited me up to attend Cora Jesu - Heart of Jesus - every other week they would have this "holy Hour" - Jesus would be present in the monstrance, praise and worship music would be sung to Him, and about 4 priests were there throughout the beautiful Church on ST Thomas campus hearing confessions as this was all going on... Susan spoke briefly first sharing her love for and need for Jesus in the Eucharist!  Then Fr Criag spoke and then placed Jesus in the monstrance... then something amazing was added that touched me very deeply - a scarf type altar cloth was draped around the bottom of the monstrance and hung down on both sides of the altar... we present, and the church was filled... were invited to come up and hold onto the hem of his garment and have this time of communion and healing!
Sitting there and watching those come forward two by two to kneel at the foot of the altar and to hold onto the fabric of his garment!  The tears flowed!  I was most touched to see a Bride of Christ - a sister for probably 20 years - come forward and spend such personal close time with her spouse!  I have come to realize that to wish Hallel to come home and spend time with us for a period of time is not fair to her... It deprives her of this time with Jesus - her daily mass and Holy Hour!
The simple yet stunningly beautiful chapel they built to make this run down huge Belgian rectory in a poor section of Kansas City - their temporary home! Many hours of prayer for all the intentions of the world, and their neighborhood, and yes for our cancer journey with John took place here!
I am longing to return for my 3 days with them next week...I think that you can "see" the work of faith and love that goes on here many times a day!
John relys on their love and prayers, and knows that the prayers of the Community, throughout the world, were hugely involved in his healing!  We are at peace here with our new family... we did not lose Susan/Hallel... we gained many new family members!  Such a blessing to know them and to have them filling us with peace on this road of suffering...
The Lord's words to us today; " Do not be afraid: just have faith."
St Paul tells us in the first reading this amazing thought - "For the sake of the joy that lay before him Jesus endured the cross..." Hebrews 12: 1-4 Wow, this is so much what we discovered in embracing the cross - cancer/healing- the joy that we found in our healing and finding that the cross is truly the "tree of Life!"
"Your faith has saved you.  Go in peace and be cured of your affliction."  I just love it when Jesus speaks to us!  We can be assured of His Love and Healing... we need to share with the world so that hopeless and suffering people - like this woman in the Gospel today - can know and believe and reach out to HIM!
Jesus, we are so moved by all the stories of faith that we hear and see and know.  They fill us with the Truth and we are set free to love and to serve!  Your Word comes to life and allows us to know that you are there to heal us as we embrace the Cross of Life - the Tree of Life!  We are weak, and we need you, and depend on you to see us to the JOY of the resurrection!  That Easter joy that fills us each time we come before you at mass and as we visit you... sitting at your feet and holding onto the hem of your garment trusting and knowing that you LOVE us with your life and are there with your loving and forgiving arms open wide to embrace us and bring us to the path laid out in front of us!  Jesus, we trust in you!  Amen and Halleluia!

"Suffering produces a form of intospection in which the spirit penetrates to the very roots of life... Suffering deepens consciousness by emptying it of all the preoccupying and distracting objects that had sufficed to fill it.  Some people acquire a sensitivity , a seriousness, an interior, and personal value as a result of certain sufferings they have undergone... Relationships between two people have an acuteness and a depth that is in direct proportion to their common suffering... In the difficulties that suffering presents, in the anxiety it causes, in the abrupt return it forces us to make into our individual and seperated self, it deprives us of every resource and every strength but those which we can find deep within ourselves." CHRIST!
Louis Lavelle (1951)
