We also celebrated John's birthday which lands on today! The Feast of St Blaise is a familiar blessing we are given on February 3rd! What a brutally cold day that was 31 years ago, and this year we had a big thaw going on.
How John asked the Lord to show him the path he had for him! Discerning a year in Seminary, many jobs and even some girlfriends along the way. Many times sharing his story of half-heartedly asking for Faith and getting brain cancer to accomplish that in his life.
After he had proposed to Bobbi after about 5 months of dating.. she shared with him her 10+ years of praying for her future husband, John Verly! Through brain cancer, seminary, girl friends, and all that he faced - her prayers were getting him through! Talk about the power of prayer and how important those prayers are for your future spouse!

Here is the amazing story of Bobbi's prayers for John, which she shared at their wedding reception! I looked around to see people absolutely amazed to hear this...
After being classmates for all 13 years for them to come together 10 years after graduating is kind of special. She shared to the 300 family and friends gathered at the reception in her sweet humble way about how John Verly popped into her head and heart when they were seniors in HS as her future husband. Time and time again the same answer came to her through prayer and roses from St Therese and opening her eyes to see him right in front of her at WYD in Australia... When we consider what John experienced over those 10 years... brain cancer, seminary, girl friends, ups and downs and how disheartening it probably was and how powerful her prayers were for him!!!! Amazing!!! And how patient and trusting and prayerful and waiting and praying for John, this sweet girl was!
Bobbi shared the reading on the day of their engagement from the Divine Mercy Meditation on Nov 9th..."God will fulfill what he reveals." Come Holy Spirit!!!
The Gospel on this John's 31st birthday is the healing by Jesus of the man possessed by Legion of demons! Such a powerful story of healing! What really struck me was how the man longed to join Jesus and get into the boat with him as he was leaving. Jesus then very directly tells him to return to his family and share there His newfound healing and Faith in Jesus and His Bride, The Church!
As he was getting into the boat,
the man who had been possessed pleaded to remain with him.
But Jesus would not permit him but told him instead,
“Go home to your family and announce to them
all that the Lord in his pity has done for you.”

I just had a great and exciting talk with Nancy and her baby George busy with loud voicings and bangs of this and that in the background. She is in the running for a grant to bring Catholic Faith more into the homes - "Domestic Church!" I am in awe and so hopeful that this powerful ministry may take wings and soar to the highest heights! There is no more important place to share our Faith with JOY than in our homes!
To hear this firm and definite direction of Jesus to all of us this day... we too have been healed by Jesus and set free from our sins and the darkness has been scattered by His LIGHT! We need to share that with our families and grow in the knowledge of our Lord and His Bride, The Church in our domestic Church/family!
How true these words of St JPII rang in my heart, mind and soul when I first discovered the term Domestic Church!
“Thus the little domestic Church, like the greater Church, needs to be constantly and intensely evangelized: hence its duty regarding permanent education in the faith…the family, like the Church, ought to be a place where the Gospel is transmitted and from which the Gospel radiates…the future of evangelization depends in great part on the Church of the home” (#51-52).

“Christian marriage, like the other sacraments, “whose purpose is to sanctify people, to build up the body of Christ, and finally, to give worship to God,” is in itself a liturgical action glorifying God in Jesus Christ and in the Church” (#56).

When I pray for our families - I use the 3rd joyful mystery/the Birth of Christ and the beginning of the Holy Family - the model for us to follow in our Domestic Church/family and our prayers are lifted up to them for this intention!
Jesus, we thank you for allowing us to experience your unconditional love and forgiveness in our lives as it helps us love no matter what we face in our homes - "Wounded, I will never cease to LOVE!" motto of The Community of the Lamb! There are bound to be hurts when we live so closely with those we love the most... may we die to self so that you may give us the strength to return to them the love and forgiveness we receive from you, Lord Jesus! We are so blessed to have your Mother with us and helping us and holding us close to her Immaculate heart and taking our needs to her Son, who loves her so much! We can never love Mary too much... we can never love her more than Jesus does! Jesus, we trust in you. Amen and Hallelujah

Saint Blaise was the bishop of Sebastea and a doctor. The first known record of the saint's life comes from the medical writings of Aëtius Amidenus, where he is recorded as helping with patients suffering from objects stuck in their throat. Many of the miraculous aspects of St. Blaise's life are written of 400 years after his martyrdom in the "Acts of St. Blaise."
Saint Blaise is believed to begin as a healer then, eventually, became a "physician of souls." He then retired to a cave, where he remained in prayer. People often turned to Saint Blaise for healing miracles.
In 316, the governor of Cappadocia and of Lesser Armenia, Agricola, arrested then-bishop Blaise for being a Christian. On their way to the jail, a woman set her only son, who was chocking to death on a fish bone, at his feet.
Blaise cured the child, and though Agricola was amazed, he could not get Blaise to renounce his faith. Therefore, Agricola beat Blaise with a stick and tore at his flesh with iron combs before beheading him.
In another tale, Blaise was being led to the prison in Sebastea, and on the way came across a poor old woman whose pig had been stolen by a wolf. Blaise commanded the wolf return the pig, which it did -alive and uninjured - to the amazement of all.
When he reached Sebastea, the woman came to him and brought two fine wax candles in an attempt to dispel the gloom of his darkened cell.
In the Middle Ages, Blaise became quite popular and his legend as a beast tamer spread. He was then referred to as the "saint of the wild beast."
Many German churches are dedicated to Saint Blaise, sometimes called Saint Blasius.
In Great Britain, the village of St. Blazey got its name from Saint Blaise, and a church dedicated to the saint can be found in Decon hamlet of Haccombe, near Newton Abbot.
There is a Saint Blaise's Well in Kent, and the water is believed to have medicinal properties. A Blessing of the Throats ceremony is held every February 3 at Saint Etheldreda's Church in Londan and Balve, Germany.
A Catholic middle school was named after Saint Blaise in Bradford, West Yorkshire. The name was decided upon when the link between Bradford and the woolen industry was connected to the way St. Blaise was martyred: with woolcomb.
Saint Blaise is often depicted holding two crossed candles in his hand, or in a cave with wild animals. He is also often shown with steel combs. The similarity of the steel combs and the wool combs made a large contribution to Saint Blaise's leadership as the patron saint of wool combers and the wool trade.

THE BUMMER LAMB
Every once in a while, an ewe will give birth to a lamb and reject it. There are many reasons she may do this. If the lamb is returned to the ewe, the mother may even kick the poor animal away. Once an ewe rejects one of her lambs, she will never change her mind.
These little lambs will hang their heads so low that it looks like something is wrong with its neck. Their spirit is broken.
These lambs are called “bummer lambs.” Unless the shepherd intervenes, that lamb will die, rejected and alone. So, do you know what the shepherd does?
He takes that rejected little one into his home, hand-feeds it and keep it warm by the fire. He will wrap it up with blankets and hold it to his chest so the bummer can hear his heartbeat. Once the lamb is strong enough, the shepherd will place it back in the field with the rest of the flock.
But that sheep never forgets how the shepherd cared for him when his mother rejected him. When the shepherd calls for the flock, guess who runs to him first?
That is right, the bummer sheep. He knows his voice intimately.
It is not that the bummer lamb is loved more, it just knows intimately the one who loves it.
It's not that it is loved more, it just believes it because it has experienced that love one on one.
So many of us are bummer lambs, rejected and broken. But He is the good Shepherd. He cares for our every need and holds us close to His heart so we can hear His heartbeat.
We may be broken but we are deeply loved by the Shepherd.
