Sitting in the ashes of repentance

Such a sweet picture Ruth took... I had to borrow it to start my sharing today.  Looking out on a snowy landscape after things got semi brown and melty yesterday.  It felt so good outside after work that I turned off the heat in the car and put my window down a few inches all the way home.  The fresh breeze on my overheated face felt so spring like although it was only about 34 degrees outside!  I definitely think that cabin fever/spring fever is setting in for all of us!

Today the reading from Jonah about repenting of Nineveh - I can relate to as I feel that the Lord is dealing with my selfishness and calling me to repent and change my ways.  How I struggle against the human condition of wanting my way, and my comfort, and my time, and my space, and my food, and my drink, and my sleep, and my TV shows, and my feeling good, and my enjoying the good things in life, and for all to go smoothly and without a hitch, and for those frustrations to stay away, and for my life to be picture perfect, without the reminder that it isn't about me and my wants, but it's about serving Jesus and following all the teachings of The Church.  And how do we do that each minute of each day - by serving one another most especially those in our domestic Church/family!

16 month old Luke on the bouncy seat tractor taken by Ruth yesterday as they too enjoyed the nice weather.

It is so much easier for me to be critical of the faults of others than to focus on my own!  As I strive to let go of my selfishness, I also cling to my judgmental attitude towards those around me.  I justify my sins by magnifying and criticizing the sins I observe of others.  Yes, I need to sit in the ashes and ponder this place which does not allow me to love and serve as I should.  I imagine that sackcloth is very scratchy and miserable and the cold ashes of a fire once there warm and comforting is cold and dirty and icky... it would really allow your poor condition to sink in and cause me to realize how much a mess a make of my life when I try to take it over.  I am sinful and sorrowful and need to give it all over to LIFE/LOVE/LIGHT/ Jesus!

Last year Luke was a tiny baby at calving time... it will be interesting to see him interact with the baby calves this year.  The way he wrestles with his new puppy makes me wonder if he will tackle the calvies too... as long as their mothers are out eating and it is just Luke and the calves.

My patron saint of Family as he was Pope for the first 27 years of our marriage and was a champion for LIFE and for Family!  I love this and it is so true!  It was shared this morning by a young mother of 9 kids!  Wow!  Such a lesson to the world that believes the lies that we need to limit our families to those 2 kids and shower them "with everything I never had."  What?  Aren't siblings much more important than stuff?  YES!!!!!

I have been waiting for Maria to share about their Lenten practices in their home/castle, and she did not disappoint!
"We are trying something new this year at the di castle. Along with our usual daily Lenten prayer and calendar (and individual sacrifices), the kids are earning "Beans for Jesus"! Basically, we have a large cup of dry beans that represent our sins. Every time the kids cheerfully do something good, no matter how small, they can put a bean in the glass vase as a symbol of their conversion. We even have special Patrick "beans" so he can feel like he is participating without getting the bean "count" off. The trick to this program, however, is that the kids can lose beans just as easily as they can earn them. Every whine, every tantrum, every disobedience, means a bean is removed from the vase and placed back in the cup.

We are now one week into this new Lenten practice, and I must say that I do like it much better than the toothpick crown of thorns. It both encourages small acts of kindness and discourages bad behavior. We'll see if it keeps up for the next few weeks!

As you can see, the kids are off to a great start, having earned many more beans then they have lost.

Oh... and I almost forgot the most important part! On Easter morning, all of those little acts of love, which in real life are made so much more beautiful and effective through the grace of God, become JELLY BEANS! How fun is that!?"
I can't send you to Maria's blog so I have been given permission to share.... I think this is a wonderful idea so...
Go kids go!!!  You are doing a great job - kindnesses to one another far outweighs the giving up in our family peace and happiness one with the other!  Think of all those beans becoming sugar!!!! with the rising of Jesus from the dead!
 It is white again!!!

Jesus, being reminded of our need to give to each other rather than to be constantly concerned with that which we are denying ourselves.  Yes, it is good to sacrifice from the pleasures, but it is equally or more important to love and serve those closest to us.  May we give cheerfully and joyfully this day, as we rise from the ashes and wash our face and get out of our sackcloth - knowing that God heard our repentant prayers and answered them with newness of life!  Imagine how precious LIFE would be to those in Nineveh as they looked upon it with the eyes of their hearts.  Realizing that they came so close to losing all due to their selfishness and sinfulness.  Jesus is there with his nailscarred hands open wide to take us close to his heart burning with love for us.  If only we repent and ask for his forgiveness.  May we come to him on our knees in the confessional often and experience his healing unconditional forgiveness.  Jesus, we trust in YOU.  Amen and Hallelujah
The house kittens experienced their first snow today... we laughed at their cuteness at they pawed at the patio door while we shared morning prayer.  Bless-bless, Barbara Luke
Cow TV this morning as Pat lets the cows soon to calf out of the barn to eat this morning.  Still just the one early calf, but soon...  Things will be popping around here.  Please, Lord, give us a good calving season.

'“Stay where you are. Find your own Calcutta. Find the sick, the suffering and the lonely right there where you are — in your own homes and in your own families, in your workplaces and in your schools. … You can find Calcutta all over the world, if you have the eyes to see. Everywhere, wherever you go, you find people who are unwanted, unloved, uncared for, just rejected by society — completely forgotten, completely left alone.”

Inclined to say "no?"

I am being challenged on this Lenten journey and I know that is what LIFE is all about and improving and leaving behind that sinful and selfishness which I battle.  Am I inclined to say "no?"  Yes, it is true that I have a negative feeling about doing things for others, and for the smaller things I might not even feel negative before I say "Yes."  If something is big and daunting I might cringe inside and begrudgingly say "yes."  I might even say the dreaded selfish "No."  To make a blanket statement that I am always inclined to say "no" is far from the truth... I hope and pray!
As Pat says - "It is fun to see how at home the grandkids are at our place."  Suddenly all the kid stuff in our home is brought to life.

Yes, I admit I am not a good servant and it is so hard to have this pointed out to me.  It is a battle I lose from time to time, but not across the board!  I know that I need to work on it, and the many times a day I say the "Our Father" given to us today in the Gospel - Matthew 6:7-15 - I need to focus on "thy will be done" and "deliver us from evil."
Little Luke will be 16 months next week and admires his farmer grandpa Pat!  He loves to sit buckled beside him in the new tractor, and all the work he does.  Grandpa has a pliers on his belt!
Grandma had so much fun putting French braids in Rose Ida's hair!
 Grapes and Sesame Street...
Watercolors - I am convicted to try harder and to fight that inclination I have to say "no" to the big and difficult things that come along.  There are people in my life that are good examples to me, and I can take a lesson from them.  But mostly I need to recognize my faults and weaknesses and have an attitude change.  Then the tough part is to go and do it with a positive and serving attitude.  That's really the hard part for me!
Dear Lord... may the words of Your Prayer to us - "The Our Father" - remind me that I am called to give more willingly to others and die to self.  May that selfish inclination to say "no" be dealt with better as I struggle to give without counting the cost.  Jesus, I trust in you. Amen and Hallelujah
Bless-bless, Barbara Luke with my future little rosary girl...
These two learned well at her feet to say "yes" to all that comes along with life... nothing is too hard to face!

The hands tell a story of a long life of love

Mom Verly always has talked about Pat's huge hands. " He was born with such big hands."  Today the talk was about how they will get so rough with calving coming just around the corner.  But this picture is nothing but gentle and loving and a softness fills it from the sweet floral bedspread to the glow in the dark rosary that is always with her these days.  Mom's touching is so big these days of lots of sleeping and visiting with those that care for her or stop in to visit and share memories or share how much she means to so many.  Her hand is always patting, holding and connecting.  A beautiful sharing!
The LIGHT and shadows of the sunlight warming the shared moment.  Bless-bless, Barb

"I was thirsty and you gave me a drink."

I have this picture on my wall and love to look at it and appreciate the activity of LIFE displayed here.  It is as if a wave from the ocean of LIFE/LOVE/LIGHT is washing over Hallel, and she is anticipating the freshness and the energy that fills you as you dive down under and then swim to the surface and catch a breath of the fresh air!  With Mary the Mother of God and St Therese looking over her shoulder with smiles of delight at the great LOVE for LIFE that permeates our family starting with my Patrick on our engagement weekend reassuring me through the Holy Spirit - "The world needs LIGHTS."  when I asked him if we were being selfish to have a large family when all the other couples were limiting their families to 2 at the most!  http://familysoulstory.blogspot.com/p/my-most-cherished-cross-patrick-gerard.html  here is the page I have devoted to our marriage stories.
A sweet one of Maria homeschooling her oldest , while holding her newborn being greeted by her 2 year old Patrick.  I think you can tell that I have not had a chance to take pictures for a few days, and so I am digging into my older ones.  Ruth is bringing her 2 youngest over shortly, so photo op time!

We all got up this morning together to have breakfast and prayer before John headed out on his first day of work.  While reading the Gospel from Matthew Pat said that it reminded him of Little Sister Alma, and I shared that it reminded me of our TEC friend, Larry, who used it in his funeral mass.  Yes, it was his funeral and he had chosen this... the separating of the sheep from the goats in Matt 25!  This is when God brings the sheep into his Kingdom for they..."Come, you who are blessed by my Father.  Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.  For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me."  Our friend did this and certainly could remind his friends that we need to do likewise!
A lady that lives this out is my mother in law!  I love this picture of her and her son, Ed, sharing her applesauce with very willing little 8 month old Dominic!

Pat's story of Little Sister Alma is a powerful one that she shared with him while they walked through their poor neighborhood in Kansas City, Kansas a few years back.  She told him about a day they went begging for their food in a poor neighborhood.  "We knocked on the door and were greeted by a young woman - we could tell by her tattoos that she had been in prison and was a member of a gang.  When we asked if she could share any food with us, she became very upset and told us that she didn't even have food for her kids!  We then shared with her the Gospel that we always carry with us and in the process of sharing she said to us; Well, I suppose I could get you a glass of water."  Little Sister Alma was so moved by this and felt that she had allowed this hardened woman to give to someone in need, and opened the door for her to come closer to Jesus and find salvation.
Dominic holding onto great-grandma's finger... she has experienced 95 more years of life, yet they share the bond of Family LOVE!

Jesus, a new week lies ahead of us filled with many opportunities to love and to serve our domestic Church/family without counting the cost.  May we give and give and give some more and die to self so that you may live in us.  Use us to your honor and glory and may we have the eyes of our hearts to see those that are in need around us.  May we minister to them - giving all we have and then some.  And for those wounds in our lives that are keeping us apart one from the other... may these words ring in our hearts, minds and souls - "Wounded, I will not cease to LOVE."  This is so difficult, yet we are asked to embrace those humbling and hurtful times each day and continue to love and serve!  The psalm today #19 - "Let the words of my mouth and the thought of my heart find favor before you, O Lord, my rock and redeemer."  May the words that come out of my mouth be Life-giving!  Jesus, we trust in YOU.  Amen and Hallelujah

"The kiss of your LOVE, O My Jesus."

'"Let me live and die O My Jesus, in the kiss of your Love!"'
"Let me live and die O My Jesus, in the kiss of your LOVE!"  Isn't this beautiful in every way?  I am just back from Mass and totally feel this way!  Jesus has touched me and entered me -His Body and Blood in the Eucharist, and into my heart and soul as He came to me in The Word!
'So why don't you MARRY him! #nun #catholic #catholicmeme'
I found this cute one that I shared, too!  How I love to know that there are many that have said "yes" to this beautiful life including my 4th daughter, Susan/Little Sister Hallel.  She loved Jesus so much that she did marry him!

Just the cows and me starting this first Sunday of Lent

A blurry motion picture as John rubs the new calf the other day... our first calf born this calving season is now laying next to his mother for warmth on this frigid Sunday morning.  As I look over my left shoulder I see the barn camera going back and forth scanning the 30 some cows locked up in the calving barn close to having their calf.  All is quiet this morning, but soon the calves will be coming many a day and night.  Some cows will need help from farmer Pat and Paul, but hopefully most will come naturally.  Prayers for calving are often and frequent these days.  There is always the Faith element of LIFE around here!
On our knees in the corn stalk bale bedding....respecting and serving new life.  There is very much a feeling of awe to know that this cow grew this calf up to 70 pounds and even some closer to 100 in just the time that a human can grow a baby up to 7 pounds!  All LIFE is a powerful reminder that God is so amazing and mysterious and we certainly cannot understand how God creates life and certainly it is all done out of LOVE beyond all telling!  Today Jesus in the Gospel tells the world "This is the time of fulfillment.  The Kingdom of God is at hand.  Repent and believe in the Gospel."  Mark 1:12-13  How do we know this to be true?  By witnessing all the signs of LOVE/LIFE/LIGHT that leave us amazed and in awe, and by realizing that the fingerprint of God is upon us and the lives we live!  LIFE is the greatest of gifts - given to us out of pure LOVE for us and so that we can carry that forth into our domestic Church/family and bring LIGHT into the darkness of sin and death!

Sharing our life here on the farm and our Faith with great JOY with the next generation!

Jesus, go with me today as I serve those in the nursing home.  May I share your LOVE with all those I come in contact with.  Thank you for all the ways we witness your Kingdom of God... the Word that is Christ among us, Jesus in His Body and Blood, New LIFE, Sharing our Faith, the Saints, Your Mother, Mary Most Holy and The Mother of God with great JOY, and all the sacraments which bring LIFE and Healing into our lives, and the prayer which fills our days - the rosary and others!  We have so much to bring us to a place of the Kingdom/a small slice of heaven here on earth!  WE thank and praise you and desire to die more to self so that you may live in us!  Jesus, may we follow after you carrying our Most Cherished Cross.  Jesus, we trust in YOU.  Amen and Hallelujah
