Dad and I just prayed the morning office on this Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows... reading both the Gospels we are given of Mary at the foot of the Cross from John 19 or Luke 2 where Simeon prophicies about Mary's heart being pierced by swords ... "you yourself a sword will pierce
so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” So true! We can run to Mary, our Mother of heaven and earth as she certainly has witnessed the suffering of her Son at the foot of the Cross and held his dead body in her arms... she knows first hand as she has been called to share in His Passion, as we are also asked to do that as we are taking up or dragging our Cross down the narrow path following our Lord!
One of my favorite Gospel readings ever, however, is the one from John 19 today! It fills me with such a sense of the Truth that Mary is truly given to us, the disciple that he loves, as our mother and we are blessed richly to bring her into our home! How often have I been called upon to justify my love for my Mother of God?!? This is all I need to know what is so true in my heart, mind and soul - that Mary is always assisting me as I struggle and suffer and stagger under the weight, and mess up, and am weak and poorly, and she is my closes confidant and mother united now with my own mother in heaven praying for us more perfectly!
Dad just this morning reported to a friend on the phone that mother joined in the suffering on the cross of our Lord in her last 10 hours of life - from when she fell and broke her hip in front of him and suffered terribly begging for us to help her which only happened for her last few hours of peacefully taking her last peaceful breaths. "Her last breath from those sweet lips was like a kiss." dad has reported as he was able to be at her side for the last hour of her life.
I guess that I had to take 4 of this one...
Jesus, we are so grateful that we are given your Mother to be ours and to love with our all... we can't love her more than you do, Lord! Just as she was asked to share in your suffering and passion, we are also asked to share in your cross. How comforting is it to have Mary with us and her heart certainly deeply understands all that we suffer though as we take the Truth out to the world fearlessly and without hesitation! May we die to self so that your Holy Spirit may dwell in us and we may become your hands and feet. Jesus, we trust in you. Amen and Hallelujah
Such a treasure - my dad with all of my 19 grandchildren! Romeo is cheering for this miraculous happening! My dad living here on the farm with me for 5 months and allowing me to share his religious LIFE with him - Permanent Deacon in The Church for 44 years!
