Dad and St Lawrence - Deacons, Servants of your Word and your Table/Fair time/"a grain of wheat"

My dad serving on the altar in 1998 in Colman, SD.  Mom and dad lived one hour from my door to theirs for 3 years while they dad was administrator/deacon of a small Catholic church in the prairie farm country.  Their knowledge of farming grew a lot as we are all city folk before coming to the farm life.

Today is the Feast of St Lawrence, who was a deacon in The Church in the 200s, and a prayer in the intercessions today struck me for dad and this martyr saint - You call deacons to be servants of your Word and your table: -inspire in them a deep love for prayer, for preaching, and for the poor.

Deacon dad baptizing #2 daughter, Nancy, in 1982.  My sister, Mary, her Godmother, is holding her.  Mary died from cancer in 1986 leaving behind her dairy farmer husband and 20 month old daughter, Audrey.

So many times dad would be on the altar as a deacon down the 44 years of his Permanent Deaconate in The Catholic Church!  Yes, they truly are humble servants of Jesus in His Word and assisting the priest at the Sacrament of the Altar - The Eucharist!  Humbly kneeling as the bread and cup is held up at the Consecration and becomes His Body and Blood!  Proclaiming the Gospel and many times preaching.

Family Soul Story - Choose Life!: The amazing story of the 13 becoming Catholic!

Dad deacon at my brother, Dan's wedding.  He married us and baptized our children.  He preached at my girl's weddings, and assisted on the altar.
Maria's wedding with many priests and my dad on the altar.  Young people proclaiming responses in Latin - dad decided that he needed to learn more Latin!

St Lawrence had a love for the poor and definitely saw Christ in them very powerfully.  The day of his martyrdom he was asked to bring the riches of The Church to the ruler - He brought a large group of the poor!  "Where are the riches of the church?"  St Lawrence "These are the riches of the Church."  LOVE!

My father's work with the poorest of the poor - Alcoholics - permeated his life with lots of hard situations and personal friendships through their ups and downs - he has his chalk talks here on the site mom and dad put together about 10 years ago when they were both in their 80s!
Last year due to no county fair due to the pandemic - we canned almost 100 quarts of tomato soup.  We already know that next week we will begin our canning season with salsa.  This week we are having the county fair!  Excitement is building!
Mary and our soup last year!
My dad loved our soup and had a bowl at least once a week!  Towards the end he only wanted soup each and every day.  Also a bowl of our applesauce for dessert with one cookie.
6 canners is about our speed.  This year the canning will happen at Ruth's as dad died in October and won't need me here.
Rose and Baby Birdie on canning day at my place a year ago.  Sitting in my mother's chair, which is here and gives me a hug from her time to time.   I lost both of my parents last year 7 months apart, and am forever grateful that I was with my mom for her last hours, and that my father came to my farm monastery for the last 6 months of his life on the same Hospice where I worked as a nurse for many years.

So blessed and grateful for my parents and having them so long in my life together, and able to say my goodbyes, and now to have prayer books from each of them to gift me with graces and wisdom and The Truth each day since!
Pat and Joy watching her older siblings show pigs 3 years ago.  The day after the fair we left for France and Hallel's final vows that year!  21 of her family flew to celebrate with her - "I promise unto death."
4 years ago Mary helping her little sister, Rose, show a pig in Cloverbuds.
David and Mary first year showing goats 4 years ago.  Mary is now a goat farmer and has a flock that she is raising for meat!  That takes a level head to take her special goats to market.  She sold 4 of them a month ago, and one was a very special "pet."
A number of years back - Simon and Mary.  Simon, who is a year and a half older has now passed up Mary in height.
LOVE some ST JPII!  He is my hero for LIFE and family!
Nancy and Bill 5 years ago in Kansas City - Josephine's baptism - John is Godfather to JoJo.

They have George now, who was baptized by Archbishop Joseph Naumann, who is another hero of mine.  He asked The Community of the Lamb to come to the U.S. and now they are planted in the heart of our country, and allowed our Hallel to say "yes" to her call to join their Community 13 years ago.  He also is the head of the Committee to protect all LIFE among the Bishops!

Archbishop Naumann is right on!  LIFE is to be protected and cherished from conception to natural death!  I see the Little Sisters, too, when 3 Americans were took their habits in KC.  John and I were there with granddaughter, Mary!
Wow!  St Therese is amazing!
Love Him with all our heart, soul and mind and our brothers as ourselves... that is hard and that is LOVE!
Simon 2 years ago - champion cow calf pair, which is where we shine.  We are beef farmers and raise beef by calving out our 150 cows.
"Mom, there is a better mom than you."  "Yes, John, I totally agree!"  How we love our Lady with our all, and she comforts us and takes our needs to her Son.
So powerful - St Maximilian loved Our Lady too!  "you can never love Mary too much.  You can't love her more than Jesus does."  St Maximilian
LOVE!

St Edith Stein/St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross!  Can't get enough of her amazing story!
She was running late for a train to start a vacation, and told her colleague she had forgotten to bring something to read for the trip.
Her friend gave Edith the only book she had, a biography of St. Teresa of Avila. Although Edith Stein had been raised Jewish and was now an atheist Professor of Philosophy, she took the book figuring it would be better than nothing.
When she returned from vacation she was a changed woman, not because of the places she visited but because of the book she read.
In short order, one of Germany's most famous female academics asked for baptism and was soon received as a novice in the Carmelite order of nuns, taking the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross in homage to St. Teresa of Avila.
As an ethnically Jewish intellectual, she was hunted by the Nazis in Germany and Holland. Finally arrested, she was killed on this day in 1942 in the Auschwitz gas chamber.
But a random book given to her many years before, and the prayers of a bride of Christ in heaven, gave her ultimate victory over the satanic evil of Hitler's Nazis.
St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, pray for us on your feast day today!

The Gospel today is from John 12 - a grain of wheat that dies to produce much fruit! St Edith and St Maximilian are two examples of this Truth! Many are touched by their story and the work they are now doing from heaven! Much fruit from their dying for Christ!

Gospel Jn 12:24-26

Jesus said to his disciples:
“Amen, amen, I say to you,
unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies,
it remains just a grain of wheat;
but if it dies, it produces much fruit.
Whoever loves his life loses it,
and whoever hates his life in this world
will preserve it for eternal life.
Whoever serves me must follow me,
and where I am, there also will my servant be.
The Father will honor whoever serves me.”

Jesus, may we die to self so that you may live in us - may we be your hands and feet and voice of Truth.  Jesus, we trust in you.  Amen and Hallelujah

Remembering a moment in time when these 3 were together and gave grandma this gift!  What would life be without pictures to remind me of the much love and blessings I am given on this journey of LIFE/LOVE/LIGHT!  Bless-bless, Barbara
