2. a cross.
How appropriate to have this sharing today when Jesus tells us this..."Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and for that of the Gospel will save it. What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? What could one give in exchange for his life?" Mark 8:34-9:1 The Gospel for today and for everyday of our journey with HIM! In marriage we are called to embrace our Most Cherished Cross with each day, and call upon our Sacrament of Marriage to carry it down that narrow path and embrace it to find LIFE/LOVE/LIGHT!

So powerful are the words of Jesus to us this day in the Gospel in the context of my conversation with my mom. As our parents are aging the health issues are mounting and at one point my mom made me laugh to the reality of how it is all leading to that inevitable death which we all face. As a hospice nurse for many years I was asked how I could work with death all the time. My answer? Death is a part of LIFE which we all face, and there is much fulfillment in helping patients and their families have a peaceful death. Looking at all their needs and helping them meet them - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. A slow illness which is forcing them to realize that the end is near and coming - it allows you to find the truth in LIFE - it makes all the material and meaningless stuff, that we give so much time and energy to in our lifetime, that all fades away and what you are left with is Faith and Family! That big car and time away at a beautiful resort become unimportant in the grand scheme of things - The Church gives us so much to help us on this last path as we walk into the sunset of our lives filled with peace and acceptance that we will finally be united in heaven with Jesus, the Saints, and our family members gone before us! How we pray with each day for them to come into the presence of our Lord - "That we all may be united in heaven someday!"
A walking into the sunset picture taken this summer on beautiful beach - Nancy and Bill with their two little ones. It is a tradition to go one evening and enjoy the glorious sunset on the white sand shores of Lake Michigan while we are there.
The first reading is that powerful one from St James - James 2: 14-24 - "What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone says he has faith but not have works? Can the faith save him? If a brother or sister has nothing to wear and has no food for the day, and one of you says to them, 'Go in peace, keep warm, eat well,' but you do not give them the necessities of the body, what good is it? So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead... For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead."
Talk about straight talk to us this day! May we take this to heart and look at the world around us - take action/works!
This picture next summer will include little Luke in the middle... well, maybe in dad's arms as he will only be 8 months old. Let's not get him grown up too fast, right?
Jesus, there are so many lessons we are blessed with from Your wonderful glorious Word! We are blessed on our journey with the Truth that will set us free to LOVE and follow after YOU carrying our Most Cherished Cross down the narrow path. May we have a change of heart -metanioa- and die more and more to self so that your Spirit may dwell within us and motivate us to do works of mercy and love for all those we find in need - most especially those within our domestic Church/family. May we say "yes" to all those that call upon us to give of ourselves without counting the cost. Remembering that even when we are hurt and suffer due to that Crux/Cross in our lives - "Wounded, I will not cease to LOVE." The Lamb shows us how to sacrifice ourselves so that the Light may shine into the darkness. Jesus, we trust in YOU. Amen and Hallelujah

St Peter Damian, pray for us on this your feast day!
Taking up the Cross
"Paint this sign on your life... the Cross... as if on your forehead; also imprint it no less on the threshold of your heart, so that when the avenging angel perceives this he will not delay to pass over without causing you injury...let these marks brand your body on every side , just as the Apostle testified concerning himself: 'I bear the marks of Jesus in my body.' " St Peter Damian, a doctor of The Church
Our 2 youngest grandchildren are a year apart and already happy to share time together!
John helping Bernadette with her shoes a few days ago. We are taught by the little ones that need us - they are helpless and we minister to all their needs with love and care. May this carry forth to all those we encounter in need!
