"Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." I Sam 3

A beautiful card we received early in our battle with John from the Community of the Lamb - Susan/Hallel had just left to become a postulant and discern her call in Sept of 2008, and just 9 months later we discovered John's brain cancer on Father's Day 2009!  John loves to have his family around him and this brought us together - even Hallel returned to the U.S. and was at her brother's side for his biopsy!
Recently there was a news item on the Twin Cities nightly news about a boy, who had been hunting and some shot hit him in the eye.  It entered his brain and he was paralyzed and near death... Dr Nussbaum at St Joseph's in St Paul did surgery that saved him and he is now recovering and grateful.  Pat and I were watching this, and looked at each other remembering the way we clung to this world famous surgeon - he gave us a place to go and a second opinion to trust when we faced the horror of a cocky surgeon telling us that he was going to do life-threatening surgery on our 20 year old son!  It was just 2 days after we were told there was something in his brain, and he proposed surgery that could have killed or permanently disabled John!  Nussbaum assured us that this surgery was not to be done - no matter what!  While we were waiting and praying at St Joseph's I had an experience that changed my LIFE!
Surrounded by family... wiping tears... finding answers!
Late June - early July staying at the little house on Marshall street with Maria and Nancy in their shared home while we all surrounded John... a aquatic center for the kids in the heat, and to enjoy some cousin time to get our minds, hearts, and souls off the terrifying "tumor" in John's brain!  It was good to have John surrounded by family and I felt the urge to cook some food for our large gathering of family. I left John surrounded by sisters and went to the big Cub food store down on Snelling to get what I wanted to cook.  After I had gotten my food I found myself in the check out lane of a black lady about my age... when she asked the usual question of "how are you today?"  I just couldn't say the usual - "Fine."  instead I said the truth - "Not so well."  "Well, at least you have money for groceries unlike this guy."  She points to the black man bagging his groceries, who checked out ahead of me and used food stamps.  "Yes, you are right, but my 20 year old son has brain cancer and could you pray for him?"  She looked at me shocked and at that moment a young girl in the next lane says - "Are you a Verly from Marshall?  I went to school with your girls, and did you say that your son has brain cancer?  Can I pray for him here and now?"  Now I was the one to look shocked and I nodded for her to go on.  She prayed for the healing of John and his family and I looked up to see the woman checking me out with her head bowed and the man bagging his groceries too!!!  United in prayer and what courage and Faith this took for that young girl in this situation!  It truly made me realize that Prayer is very important and to be used to heal and draw together in an experience of Faith shared no matter where!
The two one year olds that are now the two 5 year olds - 4 years later!  Those fingers sure must be good!
Pat will be giving a talk this weekend on discipleship and this story came up!  Not only is prayer important to have throughout our days, but as my "grocery store girl" showed all those gathered around that register in Cub that day - it is to be shared and proclaimed with total strangers when there is a need!  Prayer becomes not just the way we communicate personally with Jesus, and gain the strength and ability we need to go forth and serve those in our domestic Church/family without counting the cost, but it is also a real way to come together in HIM and assist those on the journey that are overwhelmed by their Crosses!  It allows us to assist them in taking up their Most Cherished Cross and following after Jesus down the narrow path!
Hallel home!!!
Looks of concern and LOVE!
Today is the story of Samuel and God calling him - finally he is told to answer - "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening."  John realizes that his half hearted prayer for Faith was answered by his cancer journey!  It made him come to his loss of self/humility and finding Christ and His Bride, The Church... there to give him all he needed for the battle of his LIFE!  The Gospel speaks of the power of prayer as Jesus heals all those brought to HIM, and then rises early to go off to pray in a deserted place... to find the strength and love communication with his Father/Prayer He needed to continue on with his ministry mission of "preaching and driving out demons."
Where did those bunny ears come from?  Almost picture perfect - the 5
Jesus, today we are reminded of the need to share prayer in our lives.  It is not just something to half-heartedly say to someone when they ask or are in need.  Prayer is something to do on the spot!  It takes courage and knowledge of our loving and merciful Jesus... always there to answer our every need and with unconditional LOVE and forgiveness no matter what!  May we ever fall on our knees and humbly lay all our burdens at your feet, O Lord!   May we die to self and embrace our Most Cherished Cross to find newness of LIFE/LOVE/LIGHT!  Jesus, we trust in YOU.  Amen and Hallelujah

St. Therese
of Lisieux
A MORNING PRAYER WRITTEN BY ST. THERESE O my God! I offer Thee all my actions of this day for the intentions and for the glory of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I desire to sanctify every beat of my heart, my every thought, my simplest works, by uniting them to Its infinite merits; and I wish to make reparation for my sins by casting them into the furnace of Its Merciful Love.
O my God! I ask of Thee for myself and for those whom I hold dear, the grace to fulfill perfectly Thy Holy Will, to accept for love of Thee the joys and sorrows of this passing life, so that we may one day be united together in heaven for all Eternity.
Amen. "
Four years ago we were in our little yellow house in Rochester starting our stem cell transplant month - the final battle - John is now healed!  We return on Tuesday next week for his MRI and meeting with the doctors to celebrate and once again acknowledge that fact - the new John filled with the Faith he longed to find is now healed!  "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." is what John is saying as he finds his path and carries his Most Cherished Cross down it!
That is picture perfect!!!!

In 2009 John and I would listen to Christian music as we went back and forth to Rochester daily - this was one of the songs we heard often in 2009!
