A funeral for Mary, on the 28th anniversary of Mary's death, and a tribute to Mary the Mother of Heaven and Earth

I was so pleasantly surprised to discover that the funeral I attended on the 28th anniversary of my sister, Mary's death, was also a Mary today.  It was a wonderful mass with much talk about what a beautiful lesson of motherhood and faith this older Mary was to many.  At the end of mass one of the family sang - "Hail Mary" while 6 daughters brought forth a blue carnation and placed it in a vase before this beautiful statue of the Mary and then they put their arms around each others' shoulders and swayed together around her.  I hadn't planned to cry at this funeral of Mary I did not know, but this really struck a cord reminding me of the 6 sisters and our loss of this very special one!  It was a special moment for me!  I have plans to celebrate the life of my sister with rock hunting on the lake with my granddaughter, Mary, who has discovered the interesting and intriguing world of fossils from me and her Aunt Nancy.  She has now picked up the Geology baton and gone forth into the 4H project that is largely neglected in Marshall, MN.
A special lunch with the beauty of the lake that Mary and I shared many happy times together growing up!  The coreopsis were growing down the beach and are a vivid memory of my days on the beach.  They grow wild all over the place around here... Ruth, Paul, and the kids are off to pick me a fresh bouquet on this glorious evening.
Gazing into their beauty brought the memories flooding through me... to be in this place where Mary and I shared our walks down the beach - her under my arm as we looked for fossils and shared our hearts.  Precious are the ties we have to heaven.  I also have a son, Thomas, that I lost at the same time of Mary... I named him Thomas - this is the feast day of St Thomas.  I found out my baby was dead in my womb at 3 1/2 mo, and when I called to tell my parents they told that Mary was in her last moments of life... "Tell her that part of me is going with her... my baby."  So many emotions are coursing though me!  Such a beautiful day it has been filled with the wonder of having a foot into Heaven with my sister and child.  At the consecration I had the feeling of Hallel on one side holding my upraised hand and Mary and my children on the other side.  So powerful!  That is where heaven comes down to earth and we are united in the Eucharist!
Back from Log Slide - the water was clear and very cold today, but we gathered to spend some family time in our new sand!  We rejoice in this new gift - SAND!

Paul reading to a pile of kids on the couch tonight!  My favorite pictures ever!!!
Jesus, we thank you for all the ways you call us to look to heaven and yearning to be there with you and the Saints, Your Mother Mary, and all our loved ones gone before us!  Thank you for the special times today recalling my sister and my son, and how someday we will be united in LOVE/LIVE/LIGHT!   Jesus, we trust in YOU.  Amen and Hallelujah

Mother Teresa

“I am not sure exactly what heaven will be like, but I know that when we die and it comes time for God to judge us, he will not ask, 'How many good things have you done in your life?' rather he will ask, 'How much love did you put into what you did?"
