Grandpa giving a farm lesson

It was a huge event on the farm - we butchered the rooster that accidentally was in Ruth's 12 laying hens.  The paparazzi showed up for the event as did a large crowd with varying interest in all the steps involved in butchering a chicken.
Singeing the hair that are under the feathers, and how do the feathers come off so easily?
You dip it in boiling water and...
Then the feathers pull right out by the handfuls.
The burning newspaper burning the hair off got the paparazzi up close for the shot!
Those girls were the ones that showed the most interest in this biology lesson on the farm.  They got a look at where meat comes from and all the work it takes to raise them and feed them and then kill them for us to eat our meat!  With Maria and Joseph with their meat, fruit and vegetable diet, and then there is 8 year old Mary's love of meat!
The boys were no where to be seen, and Simon and David stayed as far away as they could get.  It has been a number of years since we butchered chickens last, but it all came back to Pat after watching his mom from when he was a little boy.  I learned from the Verlys how to raise broilers and we butchered them as a large day of shared work.  One rooster was just a nice lesson and not a big hard day of work.  I think this is preferred.  Bless-bless, Barb
