Last week I spent 24 hours with my parents - I hurried up there when my mom told me that she had been sick for 3 weeks! I found her barely able to get up and move any distance without being horribly short of breath. Also her ankles were starting to swell. We went to the lung doctor and he admitted that she should be seeing a heart doctor, but patched her up enough to go to her brother- in-law's funeral/memorial service in Kenosha, WI! She had a rough time of those two days, but was glad that she had made the trip with the help of my brother, Jim. This week she has been waiting to hear about the appointment that was to be made for some tests on her heart, but never got the call. She kept assuring me that she was better and even did a morning of 4 weeks worth of grocery shopping yesterday! Finally my sister, Paula, who is also a nurse and had been reading up on mom's condition... made her call about the appointment. They had filed it away and never made it so it was to happen today at 12:30p. Paula made sure that she was to see a doctor and go over the results. It is discovered that she has a total heart blockage and needs a pacemaker put in this weekend. Most people in her condition would be very sick but her higher than normal blood pressure is keeping her alert and awake and not unconscious - her pulse is only 37! It is good to know that she has been admitted to Regions hospital in St Paul and will be monitored closely, as she was told that many bad complications could result from this - heart attack, or fatal arrythmias... so... we pray and trust that she will come through this well. I just checked with mom and found out that she is being monitored closely overnight. Dad headed back home - an hour away- due to his cochlear implant batteries going dead so he couldn't hear. He is totally isolated without being able to hear, so he was determined to get back home. I can understand this but I wish that he could have stayed in the Cities closer to mom. Mom is also worried about his trip back home without being able to hear horns or anything in the traffic around him. We are getting him home on prayers right now! It just is a relief to have mom being watched closely! She is amazing everyone at how well she seems with her failing heart. "Most people would barely be conscious, yet she is looking alert and well." said my sister Paula. So we continue to pray for my parents and they certainly are praying for each other. Prayer is what we have now along with some help from the medical to get our mother on the mend and back on her feet! Jesus, we know that you are in control in the midst of this storm.
