Not too often in the fall do I take Pat a hot meal.. He is very easy going and is fine eating out of a lunch pail, but tonight I am working overnight at the nursing home, so I am up and able to take him a early supper and really see corn harvest in the daylight for the first time - due to working days at the NH over the weekend! I missed seeing John helping in the graincart, but did get to see Paul home from teaching for the day... tilling behind Ed as he combines!
Ed combining and Paul tilling in the golden landscape... Pat said that it is "bone dry" this year and the corn does not have to be dried before it is put into the bin and is yeilding great! Pat was saying that the fields are so dry that even the hot muffler on the pickup could possibly start a fire with all the dry matter out there!
I was standing in a cloud of misquitoes as I was trying to take this shot... That is one sign of all the rain we had about 3 weeks ago now! They are healthy and so are the gnats out by the clothesline. Even Pat was swatting misquitoes and usually he totally ignores them... that means that there must be almost enough to carry him away! I went and crawled into the pickup after this and turned on the air conditioning full blast with the windows closed... kind of crazy for October 11th!
Pat spends lots of time in trucks this time of year... Back and forth, unload and go and get the next one, and crawling up and down grain bins... Lord, protect him!
An upside down pail is a makeshift easy chair to take ease some of the tireness of long hours of harvest... watching the corn unload is not quite as stimulating as watching Deadliest Catch ( one of his favorite shows), but this is the time of year when all their hard work and prayers come to fruition! In other words... this is what pays the bills and so they are willing to work long and hard, and the wives are the ones that need to be praying constantly for their welfare! Hear the prayers of the farmwives, dear Lord!
I will be writing later in the day tomorrow.. I will be dragging my old tired bones into bed in the morning after a night at the nursing home... Jesus protect all the farmers, and be with me tonight as I am serving those in the NH... "Eternal God, I humbly adore you, and offer you all my thoughts, words, and works of this day and night."
