"tremedous littleness..." Caryll Houselander

Month of Mary - mother and child reigns supreme!
How little Rose loves to be with her mommy.  I see her awake and gazing at her face, and as Ruth walks around doing this or that... Rose is with her.  Here they are as Ruth shows me the mountain of lettuce she has washed to share with family.  Her entire garden had early spring volunteer lettuce for us to enjoy and enjoy!  Now the gardens are tilled and planted, but it was a wonderful gift for weeks before.  Looking at mother and child in this month devoted to our Spiritual Mother, Mary the Mother of God... this sharing was in the meditation of the day today by Caryll Houselander - Brought to Perfection in Mary.  The Gospel for today is once again from John 17, and Jesus speaks to His Father and we are able to listen in to His wishes and prayers for us..."I have given them the glory you gave me, so that they may be one, as we are one, I, in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, and that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me."
I have no shortage of mother/child pictures with the birth of my newest grandchild - Rose Ida.  I will be using them as I share the words of Caryll Houselander's poem/sharing called...
Brought to Perfection with Mary
"Our Lady gave God a human heart.
She made is possible for him, for Christ, to love me.
She gave her life to be his life.
She gave him her body, what he asked for.
She gave Christ his capacity for pain.
Giving him life she gave him death.
She was made for Christ and then literally her life became his life.
She gave birth not only to the Christ in history,
but to the Christ in all of us, she gave her good simple life to be the substance of his life in us.

Her love for him always radiated, always went out to the whole world, always touched all sinnners.
When she held him to her heart, she took all broken sinful men to her heart.
Giving him her life, she gave us life.
That is the great reality about her; she can truly say to him
'I am, that you shall have life, in every generation, and have it more abundantly.  I am that you shall have life and have it in every Christian heart.'...

"The sacramental life which is indeed the only true mysticism, the only pure contemplation, is the life that our Lady lived.  It consisted in her daily self-giving of her life to make Christ's life, to give him birth, to give birth to him in all human beings.  It was, and is, the life of sacramental love, the love which says and means:  'I want to give you the marrow or my bones, every cell of my body, the pulsing of my blood.  It is enough to be with you.  To look at you, I must be in you, must be you.  I want to be your food, your flesh and blood, yourself.  I give you my body and I give it in every split second of every moment that I live, awake or asleep, in all that I do, in my words, in my work, in eating, laughing, weeping, in sorrow and in joy, that you may have my life and have it abundantly.'

"That is what our Lady's life said to our Lord Jesus Christ, that is what its tremendous littleness means.  That is reality."  Caryll Houselander (1954)
When I am reminded of the total way that little Rose depends on her mother to feed, and protect, and care for her, and the fact that Ruth saying "yes" to life allowed her to come as the fruit of their love - free, total, faithful, fruitful love!
Thank you, Lord, for your Mother and the amazing example of selfless tremendous littleness she is for us.  Allow us to disappear so that you may be within us and use us to your honor and glory.  We are yours and can only find true happiness with you!  Jesus, we trust in you.  Amen and Halleluia

Bless-bless, Barb
"I love you, Lord, my strength, my rock, my fortress, my savior."
